This was a fantastic experience representing UBC as the Russian Federation in the Security Council at NWMUN 2019. The high level of debate, speeches, diplomacy, competition, and the brokering of deals enriched the experience of the Security Council and my self as a delegate.
The three main topics we discussed about were: The Situation in South Sudan; The Situation in Venezuela, and regulating international Small Arms and Light Weapons. Beyond the topics, we had over a dozen crises related to the topic throughout the conference.
The substantive policy work of the Council resulted in the Security Council being the only body of NWMUN 2019 passing any resolutions and we passed a total of 5 incredible hard fought resolutions.
This conference stood out for me because of the challenges I faced individually, and collectively as the Security Council.
The theme for the Model UN conference that comes to mind is courage.
Without persistence, dedication, and most importantly courage I would not have had the same results or experience in this Council without it. While the Security Council was productive it was characterized by deadlock and intense moments. There were many moments as a delegate I could have deviated in order to appease the Council but I did not. I found courage and stayed the course. Because I did that, in the end, I was able to successfully achieve the objectives and interests of the Russian Federation. Whether it was in my speeches, public statements, backroom negotiations, or brokering deals, I was able to find a compromise, common ground, and support. Individually and collectively as a Council, we had all benefited from our sensational cooperation.
