Some of the most enriching experiences I have had outside of school has been in Model United Nations or MUN. While I have always had a passion for politics, putting it into practice, in the arena of international relations and diplomacy is where I fell in love with politics.
Model United Nations is modelled off of the actual United Nations, including its debate and decorum style. It combines public speaking, competitive debate, and cooperation within committees.
I have been to nearly a dozen Model UN conferences in high school and I will be attending UBC's very own UBCMUN in 2020.

Model United Nations taught me many things about my self and about the world around me. MUN taught me the art of diplomacy and working with others in both highly competitive and cooperative environments. Learning to understand people's motivations and how to get them to view your perspective is no easy task. After many failures, tribulations, and challenges I started to learn from my mistakes and I greatly improved my public speaking skills, persuasion, conflict resolution, cooperation, and knowing when to step up to the plate to be a leader. What I've learned overall is that there is no endpoint in learning these skills and its an ongoing process that requires you to learn new things every time you engage these skills.
