Model UN conference was a simulated session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It is one of the branches of the General Assembly in the UN. The topic that was addressed was "Science and Technology for Development.
My responsibilities as the director were to manage the committee dais (staff), oversee the delegates of the conference, supervise committee procedures, select awards and to approve substantive matters within the conference such as directives and draft resolutions (policy proposals).
The primary purpose of this committee session was to of course engage in debate and diplomacy on riveting global issues but to also prepare the UBC delegation to the upcoming Seattle NorthWest Model UN Conference. That conference is taking place at the end of November 2019 (November 22-24). Overall the conference was a success in creating 3 committee resolutions that were effectively voted and passed. Using science, technology, international cooperation, and creative policy crafting, the conference was able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of development within the UN context.
Looking back from the first conference this semester to this final one, it is quite clear that returning staff, delegates, and my self has been positively impacted and achieved some level of growth. Whether that growth was public speaking, policy crafting, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or leadership; we have all made improvements, and capitalized on an opportunity to further our personal development.
What I have primarily learned is that being a 'leader' not an endpoint goal. It is a continuous process of learning, growing, and how to achieve something together. It's also knowing to give due recognition where it is deserved, to encourage others when it is needed, and to support others where it is warranted. Using these principals along with an open mind, catalyzed a positive, engaged environment and a successful end to MUNSA's conferences this year.
